METHOD OF APPLICATION
I. Application forms must be completed and submitted online via www.primrosecompetition.org. All materials must be received by January 31, 2011.
II. Enclosed with the application form must be the following:
A. A certified copy of the applicant’s birth certificate or proof of age indicating that the applicant was born after June 5, 1981.
B. A copy of the applicant’s certificate of musical education or its equivalent (if applicable).
C. Proof of membership of any branch of the International Viola Society (such as the American Viola Society, Canadian Viola Society, etc.).
D. Copies of printed programs and any reviews of the applicant’s performances (if applicable).
E. A high-quality DVD (video) on which the applicant is performing all of the following in this order:
1. Any first movement of a concerto from the 20th century concerto list.
2. One Primrose transcription or Paganini Caprice from the preliminary round list.
3. Two contrasting movements from a Bach Suite, Solo Sonata or Partita or Ciaccona from Partita No. 2, B. W. V. 1004.
Tutti cuts are acceptable in all works. All works must be recorded in NTSC or PAL format with no audio or visual editing. Each required piece should be on a single track and the order and length must be included. Video tapes will not be accepted. The recording must have been produced within 12 months prior to submission. It must be accompanied by a certified statement of the producer verifying the performers and date of performance.
F. A nonrefundable application fee of $150 U.S. by certified check, credit card or money order made payable to the American Viola Society. Please note that applications will not be processed without payment.
III. Applicants will be informed whether or not they have been accepted as participants in the Competition by email no later than March 1, 2011.
PROCEDURES FOR COMPETITION
I. The repertory of each participant must reach the Competition office by March 15, 2011. Participants must play all Competition pieces from memory with the exception of sonatas, Mozart Divertimento, and the commissioned work.
II. Each participant must register in person on May 30 at the Participant Meeting. The order of appearance by the participants will be decided upon arrival in Albuquerque. This order will remain unaltered throughout the Preliminary and Semi-Final rounds of the Competition. The order of appearance in the Final round will depend upon rehearsal schedule and program content and may vary from earlier rounds.
III. The Competition will consist of three phases, all of which will be open to the public.
JUDGING INFORMATION
I. The jury will consist of seven internationally recognized jurors.
II. Any juror having a teaching or professional relationship with a participant must declare such relationship and will abstain from voting on the participant’s performances. No juror shall have a family relationship with a participant.
III. The jury will award all prizes and there will be no ties.
IV. The decisions of the jury are final.
REPERTORY
I. Preliminaries - All Competition participants will be required to play A, B, and C:
A. J.S. Bach—Two contrasting movements from a Suite, Sonata or Partita, or the Ciaccona from the Partita No. 2, B. W. V. 1004 - to be different than those performed on DVD
B. Primrose Transcription or Paganini Caprice — Choose any one of the following works:
Borodin – Scherzo
Novacek – Perpetuum Mobile
Paganini – 5th, 13th or 16th Caprice
Paganini - 24th Caprice (with piano)
Paganini – La Campanella
Zimbalist – Tango, Polo or Zapateado from Sarasateana
C. First movement of one of the following 20th century concertos:
1. Bartok – Concerto for Viola (specify edition)
2. Hindemith – Der Schwanendreher
3. Walton – Concerto for Viola
II. Semi-Finals - The eight semi-finalists will be required to perform a recital program that may not exceed 55 minutes total performance time. The recital must include A, B, C, D and E:
A. J. S. Bach - Two contrasting movements from a Suite, Sonata or Partita, or the Ciaccona from the Partita No. 2, B. W. V. 1004, to be different than those performed in the Preliminary round and on DVD if performing a Suite. If performing a Sonata or Partita, these movements may be the same as those performed on DVD
B. One from the following list:
Arnold Bax —Sonata
Arthur Benjamin — Sonata
Luigi Boccherini – Sonata in A Major
Johannes Brahms – Sonata No. 2 Op. 120
Benjamin Britten – Lachrymae (performed without music)

C. First movement of the Divertimento by Mozart, K. 563 without repeat
D. Primrose Transcription – Choose one of the following works, to be different than that performed in the Preliminary round:

D. Peter Askim. The five-minute commissioned work will be sent to each participant two months prior to the Competition.
III. Classical Final - Each of the finalists will perform one of the following works with the New Mexico Symphony:

Stamitz – Concerto No. 1 for Viola in D Major
Stamitz – Concerto No. 2 for Viola in B flat/A Major
